143 Joseph Kenyon b 5 Feb. 1736 d —*—; m 14 June 1759, Catherine Eanos.

He was admitted a freeman in Feb. 1729-30. He bought and deeded land in Charlestown but as he made these transactions at the same time as his nephew, Joseph Kenyon(132), it is quite impossible to ascertain the exact identity of the party making the deed. He deeded land in Richmond to Joseph Woodmansee in 1750, and to his son, Joseph, in 1758, land in Richmond also. The Reverend Ralph Wood Kenyon (1421211), d 1933, in his account in American Ancestry, Vol. I, p. 42, has a very material error in his account of Joseph Kenyon(14). Rev. R. W. Kenyon states that this Joseph had children as given above but by two different wives. The Westerly and Richmond records show other¬ wise. He, Reverend Mr. Kenyon, obviously confuses this Joseph with his nephew of nearly same age whose wife was Sarah. Marcy Paine (Payne) m 27 Sept. 1710, William Hazelton, bj^ whom she had a son Jarvis Hazelton. On p. 318, Book No. 4, Probate Records of Westerly, is the following entry: 1 ‘Voted by council, Mr. Joseph Kenyon of Charlestown (Richmond was not yet set off) shall be guardian of Barberry Hazelton, the daughter of Jarvis Hazelton of Westerly—30 June 1740.” This would indicate that Marcy’s son, Jarvis, was dead and had left an orphaned daughter. A further account contained in a deed filed by Barbara Hazelton in Westerly in 1760, gives £100-00-00 (one hundred pounds) “to my honored grandmother, Marcy Kenyon of Richmond, wife of Joseph Kenyon of Richmond.” These two entries prove that Marcy had a son, Jarvis, by her first husband, and that Jarvis had a daughter Barbara, and that Marcy was living up to within six years of the death of her husband although she seems to have been dead at the probate of Joseph’s will. On 9 Apr. 1754, he received of Samuel Maxson, executor of the last will of Caleb Maxson, deceased of Westerly, sum of 20 pounds, a gift by said Caleb Maxson to Sarah Maxson, daughter of Jona¬ than Maxson of Westerly. Received by me in behalf of Sarah Maxson, my granddaughter. Book V, p. 409, Council a?id Pro¬ bate Recordsj Westerly. On 25 Feb. 1754, he was appointed guardian to the orphan child of Jonathan Maxson, deceased. As Joseph can be proved to have been married but once, this shows his wife had two children by her first husband and that this orphan was a step-grandchild. Joseph Kenyon(14) states in will that his son, Paine, was dead and he mentions his grandson, Paine. He does not mention wife or daughter, Mary. His son, Joseph(143), was administrator of his will in Richmond where he died.
